3 competitors for push-enabled chat in that space for the phone already. Nice.

yea. I am waiting for trillian astra to come out of beta. I use the desktop client, and the iPhone looks great.
I think I might try out beejive though.

Wonder if they'll port Pidgin at some point.

I used to use Trillian when I used Windows XP but it was such a bloated piece of garbage...

yea i agree that its a bit bloated. astra seems to be a bit better.
but I like the fact that most features actually work with each IM service. Like video conferencing on MSN for example. None of the other aggregators work if you are talking to a native client.

I've tried them ALL. each one got 3-5 days of play.
they all ran into problems. trillian astra had the least compatibility problems it seemed.

that said, if you dont need those "extra features" and just want "chat" and nothing more, there are plenty of options like pidgin.

Aye, I would eliminate the voice capability from my Skype client if I could. I don't like talking on the phone, video messaging, etc.

Pidgin has an encryption plugin, does strong 2048bit DES IIRC, or some blowfish. Anyway, I use that when I need my convos on the DL, and I prefer a text chat client or email so that I have a written record. It's been a long road, training clients, business associates, family, and friends to call the phone LAST.
