interestingly, im actually sorta for this type of thinking. Maybe not they way they would play it out, but still.
Web pages are stupid. Apps are better.
And being that I want to get away from webdev, this would hurry it along... hahaha

LOL That is certainly an authoritative source, Lynch being with Adobe and all.

At the very least, the garden will be well trimmed, pretty and have lots of lovely aluminum trash receptacles. And NO FLASH.  ROFLMAO

This is getting ridiculous. I don't understand which point in Jobs "we support HTML5, CSS & javascript" is walled garden. If you want to attack the real walled gardens, attack social networks.

Actually Kurdt, I agree that Apple is endeavoring to put together a walled garden. And Im OK with it.

Clearly: Ads go through us. Apps go through us. Music goes through us. Movies go through us. It's anathema to ITTO and VS. The point is that I choose into that garden. You can go Ubuntu (an excellent choice, BTW), you can go Windows, it doesn't matter. You can do anything you want, but if you like the Apple offering then you can choose THEIR walled garden. The notion that theres no choice in that garden is ridiculous to me, because you don't have to choose the garden itself.

The argument is flawed if we want to talk about Apple being equal to the open source offerings. I'm not there. If, however, its an argument of bang for buck, or what actually works FOR ME, or where (a user) is willing to experience (their pain) then it makes a of sense. There's pain in deploying a Linux machine. there's pain deploying a Windows machine. The question to ask is simply, which pain do I feel is most acceptable?

To me, a walled garden is small potatoes compared to the susccess i have with the platform.

Aah ok. I was still in the web paradigm and didn't see the full picture. I do agree then with you all. But I do think that this is blown out of the water for no reason. Yeah, Apple sells all kinds of media thru their iStore but it still doesn't mean you have to buy your media there. You can still buy a movie and import it to your iPad or iPhone after converting it to a right format. I have never bought any music from iStore but yet I have iPhone full of albums. Sometimes it feels like some people punish Apple for integrating their own devices with their own stuff. Of course they want to make it as easy as possible and as integrated as possible. If they didn't, they would be foolish business-wise.

Btw, here's interesting take on Apple's efforts to control their platform: http://stevecheney.posterous.com/apple-and-controlling-the-platform
