I am on the train that says Apple, Bluetooth 4, the phone and a watch are on a peanut butter / chocolate collision path. I think the simple brilliance of controlling lots of things via Siri, said to a watch that communicates with my phone makes a lot of sense. There's little chance that they can significantly enough pack the electronics necessary to make a full blown computer for your wrist (or at least one as capable as the 4S) ... but with BT4 you don't need it. It's simply a proxy. Of course, they'd probably miniaturize a camera and let you do the full Dick Tracy communication thing, but it's still only a proxy.

Check it: http://www.cultofmac.com/136960/i-was-wrong-about-apples-iwatch/

The iWatch already exists, in the form of the iPod Nano and a watch band (one example: http://www.iwatchz.com/)  You undoubtedly have seen those before.

The popularity of putting the 'nano on a wrist band has certainly not escaped Apple's notice (heck, they sell the bands in their stores.)  And neither, certainly, has the idea of adding more features, and/or making the watch, essentially, a fancy remote user input/output device for an iPhone or whatever.

I recently got a brand new iPod Nano free from Apple (they have a recall program on the first-generation 'Nanos, and they are replacing them with new 6G 'Nanos.)  Pretty cool, traded a device I never use any more for one that I almost certainly WILL use.  Plus it has many times the storage capacity of the iPod it replaced.  It's really quite amazing what the tiny device is capable of doing.

Anyway, I have little doubt that your prediction will more or less come true, Perks, and very possibly sooner than we might think.

well lets hope it does... im getting really concerned about this bent necked hunched over
stance people take as they completely DROP OUT OF REALITY for a few seconds
as a pedestrian in the middle of traffic or even recently it happened to me at wendys.

Can I take your order?

Yea let me get a ..... uh..... hello?

Droid zombie bent over, thumbs swipin n typin.... she even waits for a text back and then
snaps back to reality?  what was that?

so she keeps texting and ended up giving me two large chilis and 20 chikn nuggets
instead of the frosty i ordered .... i couldnt even get her full attention to tell her
it wasnt my order so i just took them and ate them hahahah

i wonder if soon ppl will lose all sorts of interpersonal communication skills.. small talk
is already disappearing ... douches with idle moments are hunched over in the phones
instead of getting to know people and interacting with those around them..  i even
saw some kid stop dancing at a concert to swipe n type... smh

Indeed an iPod/watch conversion does exist, but it simply makes the iPod a ... Watch. I think what's coming is something that will look like a watch, but actually be a connection to your data connectivity devices (pad, pod, phone) that will be as deceptively simple as the phone was. Note that people still think they're purchasing a phone, rather than a hand held computer that happens to also do cell (And cell willgo by the wayside as will in the next 3 years in favor of all data comms).

I've been thinking even since I posted this that the watch-like-communicator could even be the connection between me and the TV. Consider that many of the rumor sites say that the TV will be directed via both voice and hand signals which, unless they've got a new kinect thang happening or a license for it, a gyro-smart and GPS enabled device on the arm would be exceedingly accurate as a physical motion interpreter. I'd wear one on each arm FFS.

I've got to stop, I'm getting a stiffy.

Cell is a useless antennae and a waste of power, space and airwaves. Everything will go pure data soon enough ie., VOIP via 4G etc. Even the notion of a continual 48v audio + 75v for ring over a twisted pair for landlines will eventually go away because it's a huge amount of copper, infrastructure etc. Consider that we can do web, phone, FaceTime, you name it over 3G alone, why have more infrastructure?

I think interlinking of devices, via a very short range wireless net, is the direction tech needs to go. Look at the Nike+ footpod thingy. Transmits only about 3 meters, lasts a really long time, and does 1 thing, accelerometer. Although it can now all be in the phone, the point is relevant for other things.

I want a watch to see text messages.
Or to do voice commands. Basically, a dumb terminal to my phone.

I want proximity sensors to remind me to bring stuff, BEFORE I leave the house.

Thermostats that change when no one is home.

Lights that turn off  as well.

I can do it now, with great hassle, but I want the apple version.

I think BT4 will do that trick nicely.

big time. I want to control shit from the watch. Touch it and start my car.

Exactly. There are some interesting X10 solutions and whole house stuff, but it needs to be an API that is iOSable.

Re. Phae's question about the phasing out of cell:

The number of Christmas Eve texts (CEt) fell this year from 10.8MM to 8.9MM last year. In Hong Kong, CEt fell a full 14%. What's the cause? Fortune magazine says it's the prevalence of iMessage, Twitter and of course, email (I'd personally add Facebook and other social sites - and just wait till cloud services really kick in). Providers seem to be lackadaisical about the problem - they have a huge cash cow on their hands. But with 95% of mobile device users preferring WiFi over 3G and the adoption trajectory of those mobile devices, SMS is going to start taking a much larger beating in the near future I think.

This post at Cult Of Mac is clearly Apple biased, but it outlines the future IMO - carriers are going to get squeezed because people are not bound to cell voice or SMS any longer (or at least the requirements is getting considerably smaller). And as WiFi waves bubble across cities and out from businesses etc etc you're going to see less appetite for paying carrier rates for data.

The thermostat is already available — not from Apple, but from a company founded by ex-Apple folks.

http://www.nest.com/

I've read nothing but good stuff about it.  Been so successful that they sold out their 2011 production and weren't saying when they'd have more (but I assume it's soon if not already.)

Yeah that rocks ... And it think it's very indicative of the future directions.

Do you have one yet? Wink

http://4sp.in/70G

it actually can tell what your looking at when your looking at it...

they could keep actual stats on who literally 'looked' at your ads.... but on the other hand i dont want
some trigger firing off everytime i have adhd ...      what do you think about eye control?
