Apple has so much lead in the marketplace now that the iphone is developing a 'social promotion' aspect.  By this, I mean that many want to have the same apps, the same UI, everything the same as they've seen being used by their co-workers and family.

Yeah, there's the jones effect but there is also the 'laziness,' 'safety-in-numbers,' and 'i-do-not-want-to-reinvent-the-wheel' aspects, too.  On the outside, we're being exposed -almost barraged, in fact- with useful/nifty apps that are obviously working just fine for their user. If I buy an iphone, all I have to do is ask here if anyone has an app which whatever.  OTOH, I buy an android and I have to go  out and research the apps.  AND -horror of horrors- what if I find that I want my phone to interface with an app that is exclusive to the iphone? I'd be SOL.

They have a proven track record and a secure marketplace now and are all the news.. so people
are not afraid of the new iphone ...  but its the easiest option to use out
there.... i have a 'mountain man' friend who dissolutes motherboards
just by being near them... He cant use a computer to save his life
but he can rock his ipod touch straight to the lynard skynard playlist
in 0.2 seconds flat.  The Apple mobile UI is just the shiznoss....  so accessible.

The 1.7 number is incredibly impressive. More so even because there's no been ample time for people to be disillusioned or convinced otherwise about the iPhone (& iPad, iPod)'s capabilities and/or incapabilities.

Apple has really done it.
